E9 BY REQUEST |
Like my previous material, there's a CD and a book. The CD contains a track of the solo with me playing it, followed by the rhythm track I used without me playing, and the book includes tab for all the solos I play The songs on the course are (click links for MP3 song samples): Out of Stock |

ESSENTIAL BANDSTAND SOLOS |
This initial book/CD set contains 15 solos/turnarounds to some of the most popular traditional country tunes played here in Texas. Rather than presenting the entire song with verse, chorus, etc., these arrangements are for the most part 16-bar solos as would be played onstage in a band situation, some with intros and tags. All recordings and tabs are for E9, and geared for the experienced beginner to intermediate player. Some of the solos are my own melodic interpretations, while others are very close to those found on the original hit recordings. There's shuffles, ballads, swing-style songs, etc. I think y'all will find it useful. The songs included are (click links for MP3 song samples): Out of Stock |

SHUFFLES, BALLADS, and WALTZES, VOLUME 2 |
Once more, I stress PLAYING THE MELODY, which I feel is the best way to break the mindset of non-melodic "licks" playing, understand scales played in harmony, and to learn the fretboard of the steel guitar with alternate positions for minor chords, dominant (b7) chords, and major-seventh chords as well. Each solo track is between 1 1/2 minutes to 2 1/2 minutes in length and plays the song in its entirety, frequently with several choruses. Generally, each song has a 4 bar intro and a 4 bar tag or "outro." Following each track with my recorded solo is the rhythm track I used for backup. The student then has a rhythm track to play to himself. The CD is over 40 minutes in length. The 24-page book contains the note-for-note tablature of the music I played on the CD, with an explanation included of my tablature system. I've tried to assemble the songs in increasing order of proficiency, but of course your mileage may vary. The songs included in this course are (click links for MP3 song samples): The tab book is 24 pages in length, the CD about 40 minutes long. |

Shuffles, Ballads, and Waltzes |
The pedal setup required is a regular E9th tuning with 3 pedals and 3 knee levers (E lowers, E raises, and D# lower), that are the basic levers in any E9th tuning There are 3 "Texas shuffles" in the Ray Price/Johnny Bush style, 5 ballads in slower tempos, and 2 waltzes that everyone in country music has had to play dozens of times in their bandstand work. I've tried to stay pretty traditional to the melodies of these tunes, what I call the "Jimmy Day" approach. Some of the ballads are reminiscent of Jimmy's Steel And Strings album. The shuffles are played like you'd have to play them on a Texas dancehall bandstand. The arrangements contain lots of licks, intros, turnarounds, etc. that can be applied to any number of country songs. The tab book is 24 pages in length, the CD about 40 minutes long. |

SWINGING ON E9th - Tab Book & CD Volume 2 |
Since offering my first "Swinging On E9th" steel guitar course, I've been continually asked to come up with more arrangements of western and swing songs using the E9th tuning, so here it is, pickers! Using a basic 3 pedal / 2 knee lever setup to achieve a "retro" swing sound, this course is again designed for the experienced beginner through intermediate level player and teaches twelve more arrangements of both traditional western swing instrumentals and popular standards of yesteryear played by swing bands. As in my first "Swinging On E9" volume, you'll learn to swing with alternative chord positions and progressions to eight traditional Bob Wills songs and four "Tin Pan Alley" standards. As before, the CD contains a dozen solos recorded to a rhythm track, followed by the rhythm track without the steel guitar solo. The 26-page book contains the tablature for all the songs. As an aid to learning, the solos are recorded at slower tempos than normally would be played onstage. Bubbles In My Beer - C Deep Water - F Don't Get Around Much Anymore - C Faded Love - D Harbor Lights - C The Kind Of Love I Can't Forget - G Milk Cow Blues - A San Antonio Rose - D Sentimental Journey - E Time Changes Everything - F Undecided - G Wild Side Of Life - G Out of Stock FOR SHIPPING RATES TO COUNTRIES OTHER THAN THE UNITED STATES, PLEASE CONTACT HERB BEFORE SUBMITTING PAYMENT. |

SWINGING ON E9th - Tab Book & CD |
Ever want to get a more "swing sound" in your playing, but only have a single neck guitar with a Nashville E9th tuning? It can be done and you can do it. Using a basic 3 pedal / 2 knee lever setup to achieve a "C6th tuning" sound, this course is designed for the experienced beginner through intermediate level player and teaches progressively more challenging arrangements of both traditional western swing instrumentals and popular standards of yesteryear played by swing bands. You'll learn alternative string grips to create more interesting chords, intros and endings, and several traditional jazz chord progressions only occasionally found in more "country-type" songs. The CD contains Herb playing the solo with a rhythm track, followed by the rhythm track without the steel guitar solo. The 30-page book contains the tablature for all the songs and licks. As an aid to learning, the solos are recorded at slower tempos than normally would be played onstage. In addition to the songs, there are single-note scale licks, Hawaiian-style phrases, and a short lesson in chord construction. The songs included are (click links for MP3 song samples): Texas Playboy Rag - D Steelin' Home - D Panhandle Rag - E Steel Guitar Rag - E Roadside Rag - E and C Night Life intro and solo - D Caravan - F minor All Of Me - C I Can't Give You Anything But Love - F On The Sunny Side Of the Street - C Moon Glow - E Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone - C Out of Stock. Country Songs for Dobro - Tab Book & CD |
I started out in 1962 on dobro, and really my first professional gig was as a dobroist for Linda Ronstadt in 1968, who then pushed me in playing steel guitar. I never quit playing resonator guitar, and my playing style is rooted in Josh Graves, Shot Jackson, and Pete Kirby. It dawned on me through teaching that steel players frequently are asked to play reso guitar occasionally, but don't really get familiar with the G tuning. So I assembled a course based on the series of lessons I've given to students the last couple of years. The material is a 30-page book and a CD. The book has tabbed arrangements of 13 popular country songs of the past, and essays on scales, slant bar playing, and harmonized scales. I discuss the role of dominant, diminished/augmented, and minor chords and where to find them. I list the major slant bar positions and all harmonized scales I play with them. I also cover three-finger banjo style and an introduction to bluegrass. The CD has me playing the scales, then playing the tunes with a BIAB rhythm track that is suitable for practice. The tunes are (click links for MP3 song samples): Wildwood Flower, Great Speckled Bird, Wabash Cannonball, What A Friend We Have In Jesus, Blue Moon of Kentucky, You Win Again, Cold Cold Heart, Your Cheating Heart, Wabash Blues, I Still Miss Someone, Born To Lose, and Foggy Mountain Breakdown. The book assumes the player knows how to hold the bar, wear picks, read simple tablature, and has a little experience with music. The tab and the material is for the beginner with a little experience, or the intermediate player. A totally rank beginner in music might find the material a little over his head without private instruction. Out of Stock postage paid. |

20 Intros, Turnarounds, and Solos for E9 Tuning from Classic Johnny Bush Recordings |
Here's some steel guitar licks and tricks that can be used in a wide variety of classic country songs as well as the famous Johnny Bush tunes. These are solos played originally by Buddy Emmons, Jimmy Day, Dicky Overbey, and Weldon Myrick. Having been Johnny Bush's steel guitarist for over 12 years now, I always get asked about how to play some of the famous solos on his recordings. In this course, the CD contains the recorded steel guitar parts, followed by me playing the part with solo steel only at slow speed. The book that accompanies the CD has all the steel solos tabbed out and easy to follow. The songs all use the standard E9th tuning with 3 pedals and 2 knee levers. The songs included are (click links for MP3 song samples): 1. Sound Of A Heartache intro 2. Sound Of A Heartache turnaround 3. Farewell Party intro 4. Farewell Party solo 5. City Lights turnaround 6.
